Southport, NC June 7-8

We traveled about 37 miles on a straight ICW with Oak Island between us and the Atlantic. Occassionally, we could spot the beach and even the waves. Southport is before reaching Bald Head Island, so there was no need to go to Cape Fear River. Southport is a charming small town with lively shops (one general store continiously played patriotic parade music!) and many restaurants. It is a walkable town, but we also used the marina's car for sightseeing. We went to the light house on Oak Island and then checked into the ferry to Bald Head Island. Since I was leaving the next day, we did not have time to visit BH together, but David did go by ferry/bike and said we will go back. For AGLCA folks, the highlight of Southport is visiting Robert Creech. He and his wife Kay, open their front porch every day at 5 p.m. for any visitors, especially boaters and neighbors. He has been a speaker at many of the AGLCA rendezvous and is a wonderful generous man. After I left, David returned the next few nights.
